Does cbd cause memory loss is one of the main components in cannabis, which has gained interest because of its neuroprotective properties. This property can help prevent memory impairments associated with various pathological conditions, such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, ischemia, and hepatic encephalopathy. However, few clinical trials explore the effect of CBD on cognitive processes.
Earlier studies have shown that CBD can improve cognitive functions in healthy subjects. A recent clinical trial in healthy adults found that acute CBD administration improved verbal episodic memory performance compared with placebo (Hotz et al. 2022). However, it is important to note that this study did not assess attention or working memory.

Other studies have found that CBD may reduce psychiatric symptoms in people with mental illnesses, such as anxiety and depression. For instance, a 2018 study found that CBD reduced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 11 people who were receiving psychiatric treatment.
A new study from researchers at KAIST in Daejeon, South Korea, used a cell culture system to determine how CBD affects neurons. The team cultured neurons and astrocytes on flat plates and exposed the cells to different concentrations of CBD. When the CBD concentration was high, the neurons died in a dose-dependent manner. But when astrocytes were added to the plate, the neurons survived at much lower CBD concentrations.
The research suggests that astrocytes protect neurons from CBD neurotoxicity by modulating calcium mechanisms inside the cells. This could be a crucial step in developing more effective CBD-based medications for a range of neurological conditions.
